AMERICAN DREAM ACT (H.R. 1275)

The house version of the DREAM Act was introduced on March 01, 2007 by Senator Howard L. Berman (CA).                                                                                                                           The American Dream Act closely resembles the DREAM Act currently in the Senate. If passed, it would give conditional legal residency for six years to students who:            

  • Entered the U.S. before the age of 16

  • Have lived in the country for 5 years at the time that the law is enacted

  • Have a high school diploma or GED

  • Have kept a good moral character with no criminal record

Only those students who meet the following requirements within the 6 years of conditional status would be given a legal permanent residency.

  • The student graduated from an institution of higher education or completed 2 years of college or university with good standing, OR  chose to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces for 2 years. 

  • The student kept good moral conduct throughout the six years.
